The History of Reiki

Reiki is thought to be thousands of years old used by Tibetan Buddhist Monks and re-discovered in the late 1800’s by Dr. Mikao Usui, a Japanese Buddhist monk.

Dr. Usui made the discovery by accident on Mt. Kurama where he was taking part in a twenty-one day training course called ‘Isyubuo’ which most likely included fasting, meditation, chanting and prayers.

Japanese Reiki Masters believe that the Reiki energy entered Usui’s head, in the form of an attunement, whilst he was meditating under a small waterfall  often used to activate the crown Chakra.

As he walked down the mountain he stubbed his big toe, tearing a toenail. He jumped with pain and grabbed his toe with his hands. The pain eased and the bleeding had stopped within minutes.

When he reached the bottom of the mountain he found   somewhere to eat. The owner warned him not to eat a
big meal after fasting, but Usui continued and suffered
no ill effects.

The owner’s daughter had been suffering badly from a toothache so Usui laid his hands on her face and once again, within moments the swelling reduced and the pain stopped.

Usui realised he had received a wonderful new gift, the ability to give healing to others without depleting his own.

For the next seven years he worked in a beggar’s camp in Kyoto healing the sick. Those who were healed were then sent off to find work. But one day Usui noticed that they had kept returning, so he asked them why they were back. They said that work was too hard and it was easier to beg.

He then realised that he had not taught the beggars to appreciate their life, he needed to teach a new way of living, which lead to the creation of the five Reiki principles.

When Usui left the camp he carried on healing people but this time he taught them how to heal themselves and their thoughts, with the Five Reiki Principles…
